Benefits of Trail Running

The road will always be there, but the trail is where running can come alive!

Out in nature, every step can be an adventure. Winding paths that pull you forward, soft earth beneath your feet, and the quiet rhythm of nature replacing the noise of traffic and routine.

Trail running isn’t just exercise, it’s exploration and a chance to trade in predictability for discovery. The hills and terrain can challenge you, the views will reward you, and every run may feel less like a workout. Getting off the road and onto trails can be a valuable training tool for a runner for many reasons… let’s check out why!

It’s a Full-Body Workout

Trail running turns your whole body into a team effort because the varied terrain (rocks, hills, roots, etc.) is constantly changing underneath you and requires more than just the repetitive motion of road running. The whole body is needed to maintain stability. It improves balance and coordination! Your core stays engaged to help you stay balanced and upright, your upper body (arms) work to counterbalance twists and turns and your posture muscles stay active as you navigate inclines and declines. Quick reactions to changes in terrain are essential for neuro-motor control and staying agile. This engages and stabilizes muscles (core, ankles, calves, glutes, etc.)

While it may be more rigorous and demanding, if you ease into it, trails provide softer surfaces that can help by reducing joint impact. It strengthens the stabilizer muscles that often get undertrained on flat pavement. The softer surface on most trails absorb more impact than concrete or asphalt, creating a lower repetition of stress on your knees and shins. Adapting to these ever-changing terrains will also keep you mentally sharp, which brings us to our next point!

You’ll Have a Sharper Mind

Trail running forces you to be present. You have to watch your footing and next step, adjusting to terrain and choosing your path (or making sure you’re staying on the marked path…!). Many see this as a beautiful form of mindfulness and moving meditation. Natural environments have been shown to reduce stress and mental fatigue, allowing your mind a place to reset and recharge. We all need that! This reduces our stress hormone cortisol and boosts serotonin, improving our mood. Each climb and challenge faced on a trail can help teach patience and strengthen mental endurance. Navigating difficult terrains can make you feel proud and motivated!

It Connects You to Nature

Put that phone away and soak in your surroundings. It can be an opportunity to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and immerse yourself in the sounds, sights, and smells of the outdoors. Let the outdoors be your guide; there’s a beautiful awareness that comes from being in the environment rather than just passing through. If you let it become a sensory experience, you might just want to trade the roads even more. Being out in nature can stimulate creativity and offer a fresh perspective.

There’s Adventure Built In

No two runs are ever the same! It may even change your idea of what a run can be. Running trails lessens our expectation of what the run needs to look like. There may be walking or hiking involved! There’s a bit more unpredictability, which can make it exciting and new. You may have to think more about the route than if you were going out for your usual road route. Trail scenery changes with the seasons unlike the road typically does. Running trails will have you wanting to ditch the pace feature on your watch many days. It just won’t equate to what road-running pace is. And that is a beautiful adventure that may feel new to you.

We ❤️ the trails!

Think Exploration Over Expectation! Remember though: jumping in too quickly or tackling technical trails without experience can increase your risk and lower your enjoyment of it, so we recommend easing into it! Start with smoother trails, slow your pace and let your body adapt as you go along.

Happy running!
